BesTeam's main research topic is the study of microplastic contamination in livestock farming- an extensive and great problem.
Livestock animals are likely to ingest microplastics through contaminated feed and water and
To understand how microplastics might affect animal health, welfare and production, and to see if rumen microorganisms can help reduce microplastic pollution, we are working on two main research topics.
Monitoring the effect of microplastic on rumen fermentation and feed digestibility
Examining the behavior of microplastics in the rumen environment including their degradability and the interaction between rumen microorganisms
Our studies have revealed that cattle, and likely other domestic and wild ruminants, have a silent activity against microplastics.
These animals consume contaminated feed, as well as contaminated water and air, because microplastics can easily reach their feed sources from the environment. Once ingested, thanks to their unique possession of a rich microbial community in one of the compartments of their digestive system, the rumen, they seem to be able to degrade microplastics, albeit to a minimal extent.
